Healthcare Provider Toolkit
What is WIC?
The Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, commonly known as WIC, is one of the nation’s most successful public health programs to date. Since 1972, WIC has provided healthy food, nutrition education, and referrals to income-eligible pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to 5 years of age. Participation in WIC has resulted in healthier pregnancies and improved birth outcomes for women, infants, and children.
The Nevada WIC program serves low-income to moderately low-income Nevada families who earn up to 185% of the Federal Poverty Level. Families who participate in Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) are automatically eligible to participate in the WIC program. Many of these families do not realize they qualify for WIC. Families can find out more by calling 1-800-863-8942 or visiting NevadaWIC.org.
WIC Breastfeeding Support
WIC participants know that breastfeeding is best for their infant but often lack the support, resources, or knowledge to successfully initiate or to continue to breastfeed when challenges arise. WIC provides breastfeeding education, lactation support, and breast pump supplies at no cost to support WIC participants to meet their breastfeeding goals. The WIC food package also provides additional healthy foods to breastfeeding women such as fish, whole grains, and dairy, to encourage participants to exclusively breastfeed. For an interactive breastfeeding support education resource, please visit WIC Breastfeeding Support at WICbreastfeeding.fns.usda.gov.
